A custom home should not be a floor plan pulled from a catalog. It should be drawn around your land, your light, your family, and the way you actually live. At Gross Design + Build, every home begins with listening. We design from a blank page, refine the plans with you through 3D renderings, and only move forward when it feels exactly right to you.
Our portfolio spans Greater Los Angeles, from Brentwood and West Hollywood to Toluca Lake and the hillsides, each home shaped by its site rather than forced onto it.
We build what we design
The firm is led by partners Matt Thompson, a seasoned general contractor and proud combat veteran, and Michael Gross, an accomplished building designer. They have worked together for 13 years and carry more than 50 years of combined experience. Because we are the designer and the builder, budgets are grounded in reality from the first sketch, permits are managed in-house, and construction is executed under our own California general contractor license, CSL 1079184.
Expect disciplined site management, uncompromising craftsmanship, and a finished home where the vision and the reality are one and the same.

We take on a limited number of homes at a time. It is how we protect the quality, attention, and care each one deserves, and how we make sure we are the right fit for every client we serve. If we are not the right team for your project, we will tell you at the first consultation.

What does the custom home process look like?
Three phases: design, permitting, and construction. We meet at your property, talk honestly about scope, budget, and fit, then design the home with you through concept sketches and 3D renderings, prepare permit-ready documents, manage approvals, and build. One team and one point of contact from start to finish.
How involved will we be in the design?
As involved as you want to be. The design is refined with you at every step, and nothing moves forward until it feels exactly right to you.
Why do you limit how many homes you take on?
Because craftsmanship does not scale by shortcuts. A limited number of builds at a time is how we keep our best people and our full attention on your home.
